Poetry was extremely important to Matisse who developed the daily habit of reading poems before starting his artistic routine. Matisse likened poetry to oxygen. It is unsurprising that his first literary illustrations were a suite of etchings for Mallarmé’s Poésies, 1932.
Matisse made 29 etchings for Poésies, now widely considered to be amongst his finest prints. He said that he used the extraordinary economy of the thin, engraved line with no shading whatsoever in order not to overpower the ethereal quality of Mallarmé’s poetry.
The proof-pull etchings offered here are aside from the main edition of 145. The etchings with remarques are aside from the edition of 30.
Remarque
A sketch or doodle on a print made by the artist outside his main design. The practice started as a way of testing the strength of the acid on a plate about to be etched before risking the biting of the image. Remarques were usually burnished away before printing, though occasionally some marginal marks were deliberately left in some printed editions to satisfy the collector's desire for rarities; such prints are known as remarque proofs.
